In the early sixties I was a Constable in Brighton and working on Madeira Drive in the heat of summer. It was one of those days when people decided to try drowning, get lost or injure themselves by diving on to concrete instead of the water.
John Gregson was with an attractive girl and said hello. (It's just dawned on me, the attractive young lady was his wife! I've just seen the photos!)
I recall saying to him that it was all right for him as he had started off as a Commander in New Scotland Yard without having to go through all the trauma of dealing with petty incidents. (He was on TV in 'Gideon's Way' at the time.)
With that he took off my helmet, took my bike and rode off along Madeira Drive leaving me with his very attractive friend.
The sight of him wobbling off into the distance on my bike and in my white helmet is one that will remain with me forever. I can recall his wife laughing.
Why is the memory so vivid? It was one of those days when everything was happening. A girl unconscious at the waters edge having choked on a pie; a lad with his head split open having dived from the springboard at Black Rock swimming pool and hitting his head on the side of the pool. Lost children, too numerous to mention and some I am sure had been lost deliberately.
I have many happy memories of other stars. Max Miller, Sandy Powell, Jack Hawkins, Dora Bryan, Max Bygraves and Hermione Gingold to name just a few.
