The Ring Master

Goose Fair, Nottingham, c.1983

This is a portrait of the referee of what I believe was the last fairground boxing ring in the country. My understanding is that it no longer exists; I don't know if this is due to economics or health and safety legislation. I have not been to the Nottingham Goose Fair for over 20 years. My belief is that every Nottingham child has the right to go the fair; due to a comfortable relationship with hypocrisy and a fear of the uncomfortable my children have, as yet, not been.

I took this photograph while I was at college. I remember it being difficult to print; dodging to maintain the detail in the trousers and burning the top right roof canvas to add detail to the highlights without it seeping into the surrounding roof area- happy darkroom days..........the smell of the developer.......the sting of the fixer...........
